Netsurf browser in Raspbmc?
Hi. Sorry if this is a naive question, but I'm new around here and didn't find an answer in the forum, which is a bit overwhelming. However, I might have missed something obvious.

As many others, I'd like a web browser in Raspbmc and accessible from the menu. I'm fully aware that Firefox and Chrome is completely out of the question and I'm looking at light browsers like Dillo. However, Dillo lags a lot of functionally and then I came across Netsurf (http://www.netsurf-browser.org/) that seems more powerful. And it does exists for Raspberry Pi's Debian version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgXpjH-XsUI).

Can it make it into Raspbmc?

RE: Netsurf browser in Raspbmc?
i know with the advanced launcher you can run opera and chromium
http://www.gwenael.org/xbmc/index.php?ti...b_Browsers

for me this is not really acceptable because you need to specify the websites as files. but filling config files with hundreds of websites is a little heavy workloaded

edit: you can also install lxde as a desktop and use this as a brwosing option. just need to close xbmc and run startx you will have the option to use this. theres also another thread how to run this when xbmc closes and vice versa

I had a go with "advanced launcher" and netsurf, but that was a no-go. According to the log file netsurf couldn't attach to the display ("can not find display") which points to that raspbmc doesn't run a window manager. Not too surprising.

Netsurf can be used in the framebuffer too, negating the need for a WM. It's not something you can just download though. I just saw it the other day, and this is what I've found so far: You need to download the source, edit the makefile (somehow. I'm not a programmer, so don't know how), then compile it and probably make a script/shortcut/launcher to start it from RaspBMC.

I thought your idea was a good one, so I'll be looking at how this can be done, but as said, I'm not a programmer, barely know how to compile code, have almost NO experience (apx 6hrs) with RaspBMC/XBMC, so don't expect miracles. I just thought this looked like something that might be fun to try, while learning more about the system.

RE: Netsurf browser in Raspbmc?
Hi,

Actually it looks like netsurf-fb is in the repos. I downloaded it and spun it up and it runs OK.

I'm having trouble running it from Advanced Launcher though. I think that I'm having trouble grabbing the correct framebuffer device?

Anyhow, I can browse from the command line, but the key bindings don't seem to work so I have to SSH in to kill it.

Anybody else having any joy with Netsurf?

Slade.

RE: Netsurf browser in Raspbmc?
Hi,

I am quite interested in making this happen too.

If you have any hints - because I didn't even try to install netsurf-fb - feel free to post them.

Thanks
